How to change my freshwater tank to saltwater?

I have a 72 gallon tank which was previously used as a freshwater setup. The tank is now empty because I just moved and I’m thinking of converting to salt water.

Really all you NEED to do is add saltwater and let the tank re-cycle and it would be a SW tank…
To do a *proper* saltwater tank you’d want to buy some calcium based sand (aragonite, oolite, etc) and some live rock, build up the rock structure and then add the sand (this help keeps the rocks stable, you may need to epoxy any real teeterers together)
Fill the tank with either premixed saltwater, which most stores that sell SW fish also sell, or mix some up at home and add that. You’ll also need what called a hydrometer or a refractometer. These measure the salinity of the water, which should be at 1.020-1.025 SG or 28-32 ppt
The tank is ready to begin cycling which take place on it’s own without any fish thanks to the live rock

After about 4-6 weeks the tank should be ready, you can either buy the test kits youself or take some water to the store for them to check to find out specifically when it’s safe to add fish

Also no matter what the store tells you do not add damselfish as your first addition… You WILL regret it
